The Jean Monnet Project “Transparency. Accountability. Responsibility. Governance. Europe. Trust. Sustainability” (101085395 — TARGETS — ERASMUS-JMO-2022-HEI-TCH-RSCH), funded by the EU Erasmus+ Programme, was successfully completed in 2025. During its three years of implementation, a team of lecturers from the Department of Accounting and Taxation of Sumy State University carried out a number of important educational and scientific initiatives aimed at popularizing the European values of sustainable development, transparency, accountability and good governance.
The project was implemented by a team of lecturers:
- Doctor of Economics, Assoc. Prof. Makarenko Inna Oleksandrivna,
- Ph.D. in Economics, Assoc. Prof. Serpeninova Yulia Sergiivna,
- Ph.D. in Economics, Senior Lecturer Oleksich Zhanna Anatolyivna.
The main goal of TARGETS was to disseminate the EU experience in the field of sustainable development and the values of the Sustainable Development Goals (quality education, gender equality, climate change mitigation, biodiversity restoration, responsible production, consumption and investment) for Ukraine. The project focused on promoting dialogue between youth, scientists, business representatives and civil society on studying the best European approaches to corporate social responsibility, transparency, accountability, good governance.
Progress in achieving the project goals:
- A MOOC “Transparency, Accountability and Sustainable Business Development on the Path to EU Integration” was developed, which ensures the dissemination of sustainable development values and EU professional practices among students and the wider public.

- A new course “Transparency, Accountability and Sustainable Business Development on the Path to EU Integration” was developed and implemented into the educational process in order to provide a comprehensive system of knowledge about EU actions on sustainable development and awareness of their implementation in Ukraine to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

- A series of nine trainings “Sustainable Development Idea Generator: EU Lessons for Ukraine” were held, which were aimed at initiating a public discussion of sustainable development ideas and their generation by all students of Sumdu and representatives of civil society.

- A series of nine open lectures and seminars “Science for Sustainable Development” was held, which aimed to bring the project results to a wider academic audience, primarily for masters and doctors of philosophy.

- The format of virtual classes “Best practices in the EU and Ukraine on progress in the SDGs” was implemented (three series of events), which provided for the generalization of the best practices of European and Ukrainian business representatives, academic institutions and public opinion on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Ukraine and the EU countries.

- Three annual forums “Sustainable solutions for business in accordance with EU legislation” were held, which brought together representatives of the academic community, business and civil society to publicly disseminate the values of EU sustainable development in Ukraine and find new ways to accelerate progress in achieving the SDGs in Ukraine.

- A methodological manual for Ukrainian universities “Aggregation of best practices of EU higher education institutions in the field of sustainable development strategy and inclusion rating for Ukrainian universities” was prepared and disseminated.

- Dissemination of the project results was ensured through:
– publication of 9 scientific professional articles in Ukrainian peer-reviewed journals;
– annual participation in 9 international scientific conferences;
– receipt of 3 documents on intellectual property issues;
– development and publication of the monograph “Benchmarks of sustainable development and progress: EU-Ukraine experience”;

The TARGETS project successfully achieved its goals by generalizing innovative solutions for integrating European values of sustainable development, transparency and accountability into the educational process, scientific activities and public debate. Its results contribute to the formation of a new generation of responsible leaders capable of implementing the principles of sustainability in Ukrainian society.
